BUSHFIRE WINDOW DEVELOPMENT UPDATE - "FLAME ZONE"

Our earlier report on our development programme noted that in July, our first test window had passed preliminary F. Z. testing and that we planned to carry out our next test programme in October. However it was apparent that we could, and should, make design adjustments prior to testing our full suite.

On the 13th and 14th of October we tested two casement/awning windows, both of a significantly different design than previously tested and incorporating separate glazing options. For those of you that are following our development work we should mention that fire resistant glass is made overseas and is very expensive, when we set out on our development programme one of our key objectives was that we would wherever possible work with Australian manufacturers able to supply materials made locally and readily available. To that end we have worked with Viridian Glass in the development of a double glazed, energy efficient glazing unit that would surpass the testing conditions of flame-zone. Although its fire rating maybe specific to our windows we expect the cost to be significantly less than the imported glass option.

The results of the October tests were mixed. Our first test window actually failed at 29 minutes and 10 seconds into the 30 minute direct flame cycle, the second window passed both the flame and cooling down cycles as required by the Australian Standards. At this stage of the programme we have now had preliminary tested and passed our fixed, casement and awning windows, obviously we are pleased with the results so far as one by one we have resolved our design challenges.

We still have some material and manufacturing issues to overcome prior to the commencement of our door system designs and have a series of new tests planned in December. These next tests are quite critical in the validation process and we look forward to being able to provide a positive update in the new year.
